Deforestation of the World’s Rainforests
Known as the "jewels of the Earth", Rainforests are responsible for 28% of the worlds oxygen turn over, and are where 40 to 75% of all species on Earth are indigenous.
At one time Rainforests covered 14% of the Earth’s land surface, however, largely down to deforestation, that figure has now dropped to a mere 6% and experts estimate that the last remaining Rainforests could be destroyed within the next 40 years.
The loss of tropical rainforests is having a profound and devastating impact on the world and it is estimated that we are losing 137 plants, animal and insect species every single day. Hence, equating to 50,000 species a year and if the current rate of destruction continues, it is estimated that nearly half of the world’s species of plants, animals and micro-organisms are likely to become extinct or severely threatened within the next 25 years.
